Zemlinsky – Eine florentinische Tragödie
Shortly after his death in 1942, Alexander von Zemlinsky, who had fled to the United States to escape the Nazi regime, fell into obscurity. His sultry tonal works were overshadowed by the post-war avant-garde. That was until 1977, when Eine florentische Tragödie was performed again. The one-act opera, based on a play by Oscar Wilde about the Florentine merchant Simone who catches his wife with Prince Guido, marked Zemlinsky’s comeback, but was subsequently rarely performed itself.
