Georg Friedrich Händel – Flavio, re deʼ Longobardi
By 1723, Georg Friedrich Handel was already wellestablished in London. He was director of the RoyalAcademy of Music when he wrote Flavio, re deʼ Longo-bardi. The greatest stimulus for this will have beentwo of his most successful soloists: the castrato Senesino and the sopranoFrancesca Cuzzoni. The latter played therole of Emilia, who is given a number of breathtakingarias. The slow and elegiac “Parto,si” suddenly gives the mainly comic storya deep dimension. The composer even considerednaming the opera after her character.
Concerto Köln is celebrating it’s fiftieth birthday with magnificent concerts throughout Europe, the NTR Matinee included.
